TikTok Reportedly Leads Child Accounts to Explicit Material Within a Few Clicks
According to a fresh inquiry, TikTok has been observed to guide children's accounts to adult videos within a small number of clicks.
Research Methodology
Global Witness established fake accounts using a birthdate of a 13-year-old and activated the "restricted mode" setting, which is meant to reduce exposure to sexually suggestive content.
Investigators observed that TikTok recommended inappropriate and adult-themed search terms to multiple test profiles that were established on clean phones with no search history.
Troubling Search Prompts
The terms proposed under the "recommended for you" feature featured "extremely revealing clothing" and "very rude babes" – and then progressed to terms such as "graphic sexual content".
In three cases of the accounts, the adult-oriented recommendations were recommended right away.
Fast Track to Adult Material
Within minimal interaction, the researchers came across explicit material from exposure to graphic sexual acts.
The organization claimed that the content attempted to evade moderation, typically by displaying the video within an innocuous picture or video.
In one instance, the procedure took two clicks after accessing the app: one click on the search bar and then another on the proposed query.
Regulatory Context
The research entity, whose mandate includes investigating technology companies' influence on human rights, reported performing two batches of tests.
The first group occurred preceding the enforcement of child protection rules under the United Kingdom's digital protection law on the 25th of July, and additional tests following the rules took effect.
Alarming Results
Researchers added that multiple clips included someone who looked like they were below the age of consent and had been submitted to the child protection organization, which monitors exploitative content.
Global Witness alleged that the video platform was in non-compliance of the UK safety legislation, which mandates digital platforms to stop children from viewing inappropriate videos such as pornography.
Regulatory Response
An official representative for Britain's media watchdog, which is responsible for monitoring the legislation, said: "We acknowledge the work behind this investigation and will analyze its findings."
Official requirements for complying with the legislation specify that digital platforms that present a medium or high risk of presenting inappropriate videos must "modify their programming" to filter out harmful content from young users' timelines.
TikTok's content guidelines prohibit explicit material.
Platform Response
The social media company announced that after being contacted from the research group, it had removed the offending videos and made changes to its recommendation system.
"Immediately after notification" of these allegations, we took immediate action to investigate them, take down videos that violated our policies, and introduce upgrades to our recommendation system," said a spokesperson.
