The former president Threatens Relocation of FIFA World Cup Matches from Massachusetts, Olympics from California

Ex-president Trump has yet again announced he would urge FIFA to remove upcoming World Cup events from a venue based on that city's political climate, with the Boston region becoming the latest urban area to face such statements from the US president. Furthermore, Trump suggested he would contemplate comparable measures against Southern California for the 2028 Summer Games due to perceived safety issues.

Official Power and Potential Influence

Although Trump lacks official jurisdiction to personally cancel either event, he is able to apply pressure the international organizations managing each tournament to change locations.

Context of Remarks

These statements were made during a press event with Argentina's leader Milei, who was present in the White House following the announcement of a multibillion-dollar bailout for the Argentine country. Toward the close of the gathering, a reporter asked Trump about a latest “street takeover” in the city where police officers were assaulted and a cruiser was set on fire. The reporter also wondered if these incidents could lead to the loss of organizing rights for the 48-team World Cup.

“I would take them away,” he stated concerning the soccer games, set to be hosted at Gillette Stadium. “The city's leader is poor … she is radical left, and activists are dominating areas of the city. That’s a significant claim, isn't it?”

Urban Disturbances and Political Context

Street takeovers, a online-fueled phenomenon where participants assemble on public avenues after dark to perform stunts, have emerged as a ongoing problem in metropolitan centers since the Covid-19 pandemic shutdowns. Latest similar events have turned violent in Massachusetts, notably in downtown. Yet, these events are generally not regarded as linked to any particular partisan agenda.

“When a mayor is doing a bad job, and I feel there are dangerous circumstances, I will call the organization's president, who is outstanding, and tell him we should relocate it to a different city,” the former president said publicly. “He will do that. He may not enjoy the action, but he would comply. Without hesitation, he would.”

Political Connections

The organization's head has publicly acknowledged his efforts to be publicly aligned with the US leader ahead of the 2026 event, scheduled to be staged in numerous American venues across the US along with several in Canada and three in Mexico. The organization's leader has participated at multiple White House events, had Trump hand over the club tournament cup after that tournament’s final, and has even postponed his the group's assembly to travel with Trump on a trip to the Middle East previously.

Previous Threats

Despite this, Trump from threatening the removal of FIFA World Cup events from other US host cities. On September 25, Seattle and the Bay Area metropolis faced similar comments, with Trump stating both urban centers were “led by radical left lunatics who don’t know what they’re doing,” while challenging the public safety of both areas and claiming that events could be removed.

Official Rebuttal

FIFA vice-president Montagliani rebuffed Trump’s statements when he commented afterward at a gathering in the UK capital.

“It’s our competition, our responsibility, FIFA makes those decisions,” he said. “Respectfully to current world leaders, the sport is bigger than any individual and soccer will outlast their regime and their policies. That’s the beauty of football, that it is more significant than one leader and beyond a nation.”

On Tuesday, Trump’s answer to a question about Boston veered into a parallel statement regarding the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

“In case I believed the city was not going to be adequately ready, I'd relocate it to another location as needed,” he remarked. “For the Olympics I might have to obtain a varying permission, but we will proceed.”

Any approval Trump alluded to would must come from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The head, Kirsty Coventry, was chosen to her post in this year and has so far not hold a public appearance with Trump, although she indicated that she would like a discussion with him at a future time.

Additional Criticism

Trump also criticized California governor Newsom’s handling of recent blazes, saying that a similar situation could cause the relocation of the Olympics.

“If he refuses to cooperate, we’re gonna have to be firm,” he commented.

His statement was similarly clear for Boston.

“The city better improve their situation,” he remarked. “That is I can say.”
