British Broadens Methanol Poisoning Warning List with Eleven Destinations
The UK Foreign Office has added 11 more nations to its official alert roster concerning the threats of methanol poisoning from tainted spirits.
The updated advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "a global increase in the frequency of documented incidents" of toxic alcohol toxicity.
Only recently, the government had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current list, in response to a number of notable incidents such as the tragic loss of six tourists in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being warned that even minimal doses of toxic alcohol can lead to blindness or loss of life within twelve to forty-eight hrs.
Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Utilized?
Methanol is a toxic industrial alcohol typically employed in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. This chemical is not meant for ingestion.
Although it is generated during the manufacture of beverages, licensed producers lower it to non-dangerous concentrations for ingestion through the distillation process.
Yet in some countries, it is illegally mixed into spirits to save money, and because it is flavorless and scentless, it is very difficult to identify.

Government official the minister said that every traveler should recognize the symptoms of toxic alcohol poisoning.
"While drinking spirits abroad, opt for trusted places and refrain from unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," Falconer warned.
