Applause from Pep for ‘Playground Talent’ Cherki Before Yellow Submarine Fixture

Etihad chief the Catalan coach, who has guided legends such as Messi, Iniesta, and Xavi, stated that Rayan Cherki ranks among the most talented footballers he has ever observed and believes the youngster will buy into the team-first mentality at the Manchester outfit.

Return from Injury

Cherki, who joined City from Lyon for £30.5m in time for the FIFA Club World Cup earlier this year, has managed only seven appearances up to now. Coming back from a thigh injury, he made a brief stint in the 2-0 victory over Everton recently, during which he nearly set up a strike for the Norwegian.

He is heading to face Villarreal where he have his European debut with City.

Coach’s View

Although urging understanding, Guardiola was at a loss to put into words his talent, suggesting that the only concern might be how he fits in within the setup and learns to performing fundamental plays effectively.

“He is among the biggest talents I’ve come across throughout my coaching life,” Guardiola said, exhaling deeply. “Technically and individually he is top-class. The key is how he adapts and his perception of play, what the match demands. He played at the Club World Cup, though he was sidelined. We must proceed gradually, but his talent is obvious: I believe that often when possession comes to him, things get better.
“He doesn’t always try to do incredible actions; he should simply keep it straightforward. But he has that something. Such as the assist for the striker late in the game, among many actions he is capable of.
“He is a player unfazed by tension when receiving the ball. He resembles a pickup game star. He gets frustrated – ‘give me the ball’ – when he doesn’t get it, you know. It’s only been a brief period in the team; it requires some time because you must connect with teammates.”

When asked if Cherki would fit into the team ethos, the manager answered: “Absolutely. Such individuals are very intuitive, very smart. They perceive it all.”

Recognition for González

The coach also praised the midfielder, who is likely to play in the heart of the park. Rodri has gone to his former club, and should be recognized before the match at the Estadio de la Cerámica, but is unavailable because of a fitness issue.

Guardiola noted: “I believe that Nico is getting better consistently. We’re really satisfied with his attitude and he ought to improve year by year. He is cultured, thoughtful, a lovely guy. His family have to be immensely pleased about the man and player he’s grown into. He has to remain authentic, but when you play with elite teammates, you gain experience. You notice how your game can improve, though Nico should stick to his style, for sure.”

Team’s Strong Form

Guardiola also was effusive on the club’s recent performances. “We are scoring a lot of goals, creating numerous chances, while also not conceding much. There have been only eight league games and two in the Champions League, but I feel that every match tops the one before and will be surpassed by the upcoming.

“We talk about a lot what we can do better and how we can understand situations better. I possess immense belief in the squad and I’m aware they are training intensely. We are showing very good form.”
